Hi Modris,
Thanks for your reply - there is so much more to historical lunars than I realised. I'm finding it hard not to get sucked in to wanting to learn all these different methods as well, it's addictive just as Francis warned me! Nice to hear that Thompson's method is the fastest for you, I am keen to have a paper method to take to sea and use quickly and easily so I will definitely give it a try soon.
I will put a shade on Jupiter and aim for the centre while I've only got my 3.5x scope; if I eventually get a 7x scope then perhaps I'll try the limb.
