Herman,
With an after market sextant case I was able to place and cut out the foam as desired. What I was most comfortable with was the index arm were I normally don't take sights or check index error. 80° was the chosen position. The worm gear in the micrometer drum seems to be some type of stainless which differs from brass, bronze, and aluminum. When salt air and condensation occure then the different metals can cause electolysis. Since index error is most often checked around zero then this is not a good place to leave the index arm engaged with the rack. If Bill Morris is watching then he would know more about this than I.
