The polynomials in the link I provided from the Astronomical Almanac Online were originally published in the Astronomical Almanac itself. Back before the Astronomical Almanac was called "Astornomical Almanac" it contained an hourly ephemeris of the moon. The polynomials were a way for people with the basic desktop calculators of the early 1980's to produce the same information while cutting down on pagecount.
I imagine they're still useful for calculators that have a built-in polynomial evaluator but not one for Chebyshev polynomials.
