Routing is done with a chart, ruler, pencil - and a visual check. Cape Verde corner to Cape of Good Hope: a rhumb line. For an obscure route you might check Ocean Passages of the World, but it would still be a mercator course. For surface navigators, Great Circles are only ever found in the schoolroom - but usefully.
