    Frank,

Is there a term that neatly describes measuring beyond (or below) the level of noise?  That is, when you record observations to the tenth of a minute, all the while knowing that you can never achieve that level of precision when you have an error of up to a minute in the location of the horizon.

I want to call this "false precision" or "illusory precision" -- but I feel like this is a common eough problem in the world that there must be some other term of it.

    Thanks,

    Bob
