Frank,
Both my phone and my laptop are indeed displaying a Mercator Projection. However, I noticed a little button with a circle icon on the bottom right of my laptop screen - just above the zoom and current location buttons. It looks just like the Google Earth icon. Upon hovering over it, a tooltip reads "Enable globe view. Zoom out and see the world in 3D." And that's just what happens when you click it - no more Mercator Projection.
I currently see no such option on my phone. But then - I also have the Google Earth app, so ...
