Perhaps the dessicant is more to do with preserving the pellicle from moisture. Initially pellicles were made of a film of flexible collodion. When I bought my MA1 the pellicle had perished. I replaed it with a microscope cover slip and got two reference lines instead of one, but the two lines seem to make centring easier. Of course, I could have used clingwrap/gladwrap, but didn't think of it.
