Alan,
I do think sight tube (peep sight) vs. scope apply equally to the rifle as the sextant. All weather speed and increased field of view is gained with acceptable loss of precision under adverse conditions.

Might one draw the following analogy or comparison. Think "iron sights" on a rife, I refer to the Redfield or Lyman apature sights, and or the "sight tube" you mention, compared to the telescope on a extant or the telescopic sight on a rifle.
