Re: Haversine- how to derive it?

    Ed,

Thank you so much for the beautiful dissertation on "Haversine Navigation"; it's really great to hear from a PC (pre-calculator) navigator. If the Shrewsbury River referred to is the one in New Jersey, we were at one time pretty close neighbors, as I lived on the Shrewsbury from 1963 - 1999, although for most of that timr I was away from home at sea and, for a good part of that time, using haversines daily. I still use them when clearing a Lunar Distance. Thanks again.

    Sam, yes, this is correct.

Now to return to Frank's comments about the antiquity and non-utility today of using Haversines in navigation, I have attached a short paper entitled "Haversine Navigation" issued by someone from the U.S. Power Squadron District 23.  It seems to claim that Haversines are quite useful today.

I'm still trying to figure it out. I have it programmed on my HP calculator as a standard trig function and have used it in a couple of cases just to see what it does.

Any comment on these opposing views about Haversines' utility?
