Heath Sextant P356 - reading the vernier scale

I have a 1917 heath Sextant (P356) and having difficulty reading/ understanding the 10" vernier scale and would welcome guidance.

I am frequent user of modern sextants, teaching the RYA Ocean/ celestial course after a full career in the Royal Navy... as a Clearance Diving Officer - not a Navigator!
