Alex Eremenko, you asked:
"Suppose I want to know the times of tides on a given date in 18 century, at a given location. How can I find them?
Is it possible to compute them from any currently available data?"
Yes, within some limits. The basic tidal harmonic coefficients change very slowly, and it's possible to determine high and low tides at most locations around the globe without much uncertainty. There are some exceptions, for example when bays have been radically altered by engineering or by natural change. The Zuider Zee comes to mind on both scores.
Do you have a single location and date that you want to check? Or are you looking for general tools?
