Thanks for the information re: obtaining Mackaness’ The Life of Vice Admiral William Bligh. I managed to get a copy from Abe Books (UK) for £10 plus £3.50 p&p, and it arrived by return of post. Its condition was described as ‘fair’, but for 92 years old, it looks OK to me (see photographs*). The preface is dated 1931, and there are no reprint details shown, so I’m assuming it’s a North American first edition of the double volume. A similar example on Abe Books (USA) is claimed as such.
What a fascinating book. It arrived the same day as my talk, so I had to leave opening it until I got home. I’ve been reading it at every opportunity since. It’s a great book for opening at any page and finding something new or better explained. I think that’s the way to read it, otherwise it’d take you weeks. Dave
