Peter,
I had some difficulty doing the alignment but was eventually successful. Not something to be done on every set up. I do believe the concept is confirmed though as a tool to achieve a true level. My work around is to use my sextant to level by adjusting mirror position with fingers then comparing the shift of the sun as seen in the sextant. If level then the shift would be very little relative to the diameter of the sun on the 180 lazy susan rotation.
FYI my intercept was 0.0 and each individual observation across the mirror each way was 0.1' . Probably luck.
