I suspect there are many, many things this couple should have learned before celnav.    For example, not to try to enter an unfamiliar harbor at night -- especially if you're just beginning to learn your boat and navigation.  

I wonder if they even had taken a basic boating course such as taught by the CG Auxiliary or the US Power Squadrons (or dozens of on-line providers) and required to obtain a pleasure boat operators license, as now required by all US coastal states.
