Hello Tony,
The method of a solarfilter on the frontside on the telescope is from info off David Burch.
The advantage is, that you have not the risk, if you scan for the sun that the suns peeps besides
the mirror through the telesope in your eye. So it is a safer method than with horizon and index mirrors.
But I did not yet receive answers on the cause off the ghost sun in the telecope view.
