Dave Walden attached an extract from the Handbook of Mathematical Functions by Abramowitz and Stegun which states
(1) If x0 is an approximation to the true value x, then
3.5.1 (a) the absolute error of x0 is Δx = x0 - x, x - x0 is the correction to x.
This looks like it might be a typo to me. I would have written "x - x0 is the correction to x0" since you have to add (x - x0) to the approximate value, x0, to get the true value, x.
