Thanks for the link. Eckert seems to have been a versatile fellow - astronomy professor, designer of modifications to IBM accounting machines and appollo navigation. The document was written close to the period in question so can be assumed to be accurate.
I note a long list of references. I wonder if somewhere is the answer to the question "why was 249 published before 229?" The author hints at a lack of cooperation from the UK with the air almanac (was cooperation asked for?) yet in my Abe books cart I have copies of 1618 and HO216 which show a different situation with respect to navigation tables. Maybe it is time to press Buy?
Meanwhile I will print page or two from a pdf file (downloaded from the internet) on my $100 inkjet printer. (Black and white only because I cannot affort the colour cartridges!)
