In 1953 the common man did not have access to an elecronic computer. If he wanted to determine rumb line/great circle diistances and azimuths he needed mathematical knowledge and access to relevant tables. Alternatively he could use the International Aeradio calculation service. For just 1/- ($NZ12 in 2021) the company would calculate the track and distance required.
