Shoot some planets. Hell, shoot 'em all! For the next few weeks, you can get sights on all four navigational planets. In mid-northern latitudes, you'll find Venus in the west, Jupiter southwest, Saturn in the south, and Mars in the southeast at around 9:15pm local time. All but Saturn are exceptionally bright this season since Mars is at one of its rare, closer-than-normal oppositions. For a few days around August 18, you can get the Moon in there, too. Southern hemisphere observers will find this easier than those of us in the better hemisphere since the ecliptic rides low in the early evenings in our hemisphere this time of year.
