If you have an Android phone (not sure about Apple), you can download the Google Translator app, download the dictionary for the language you want to translate and point your phone's camera at the text. Like magic, it will be translated instantly on the screen. It's not perfect, but it is amazing to see. I'm not sure if it will work for older forms of Japanese, but I know it does work with modern forms. I tried it last night with some souvenirs from our trip in 2010.
