Perhaps ..... the penny's dropped re the both ways up use of the sounding sextant.
If you're on a reference site, your target objects may be above you or below you, so the usefullness of the view through the 'horizon' mirror may be improved by turning the sextant over on its other side. All in theory, by thought experiment only...
