Looking closer at the exploded drawing of the mirror unit, each plug has a "sealing ring". Based on the screw tip design, I now think that the black "sealant" I'm seeing coated on the plug is really the remains of the sealing rings that has extruded itself over the needle tip and partway back up the screw threads. The plug dimensions suggest that a dash -001 oring (.029" x .109" x .04") would pilot on the screw tip and make a face seal when axially compressed.
