I say
Sure, the Navy could switch to metric. During my career with the NAVY, we switched three times. At the beginning of the design process for a new class of ship, it would be declared this will be a metric ship. It would last until the admirals rotated, and the new one roared 'well how long is my ship in feet' and metric was gone again.
