I can agree with you, but I am not a specialist of the use of stereographic projection for positioning !
Probably you know the papers of Robin G. Stuart in the eighties ? I remember that he was himself referring to Boissaye du Bocage (1683).
My previous comment was only about the pioneers of the 3D direct method that Georges Bodenez finalized on 1976.
In 2D, I think that Franz Brunnow was possibly the first one to give a direct solution to the spherical trigonometric problem (1860). As far as I know, his method has been partly adopted and reformulated by Charles T. Dozier on 1949.
But probably, this could be discussed...
