As Frank implies, a painting is not the same as a photograph. You could place what you wanted wherever you wanted it. The telescope looks particularly insecure. If you ever get the opportunity to inspect the painted ceiling in the banqueting hall of the Old Naval Hospital at Greenwich you’ll find a great collection of navigational and other instruments spread out amongst the painted figures. The semi circular holdall looks like an upside down version of my uncle’s carpenter’s hessian tool bag. Could one of the young gentlemen have turned up with his grandfather’s backstaff? DaveP
