There are less costly alternatives to transponders that won't make you visible to others, but will give you first hand information on nearby vessels. Some marine radios can also show AIS traffic:

Icom has a similar product (IC-M605 ) but it costs as much as a transponder. Personally I'd invest on a transponder, but that's just me. I'm not trying to convince anyone, just providing information; we're all adults.
