An absolute recipe for disaster. What if you lose cell phone service? What if the base station providing the tracking doesn't receive the VHF AIS chatter for the oncoming, impending vessel approaching you at high speed.
Plus: This does NOT PUT YOUR AIS INFO ON THEIR SCREEN.
AIS is a fabulous tool if used properly. Dangerous if not.
Digital Yacht offers " Nomad". It is a complete AIS Transponder, with a WiFi interface, so your students can use their cellphones instead of a chartplotter. Add in OpenCPN and the student will have a complete picture of the environment and all other vessels with AIS
