Attached is a typical page from the 1789 captain's log/journal of a young Horatio Nelson, back when he was a frigate captain cruising Massachusetts Bay during the American revolution.
The notations include fathom readings from 0 - 6, suggesting that his log line measurements were estimated to an eighth of a knot.
