Ed, your theory that they may be prospecting for guano islands is my best guess, too. As you'll see in the next attachment, they were definitely after "Ducie Island". The following day in the logbook, when they find it, the captain (and navigator) describes it as the "most miserable excuse for an island I have ever seen". He does not see a guano goldmine...
The goal of this next attachment is similar to the second film in a trilogy: intriguing and we find a a couple of interesting revelations... but it's really just setting us up for the finale.
