Many years ago I saw the same phenomenon. I remember a very clear circle around the moon. Beautiful!
It would be also interesting to measure with a sextant the angular size of the radius which is approx. 22 deg: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/22%C2%B0_halo
By the way how was the weather in the following days ? (halo is a sign of weather deterioration)
