I slightly edited your photo and from that I determined roughly the angular radius of halo (see attached pdf).
SD_moon = 16' (approx.)
R = 8.5*(2*SD_moon)/60' = 4.5 degree which is considerably less than 22 degree. Was it a moon corona ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona_(optical_phenomenon) ) or moon halo ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/22%C2%B0_halo )?
