Lunar surface sun compass

Today is the 52nd anniversary of Apollo 15's final day on the Moon. The crew used a hand-held sun compass as a contingency device in case the lunar rover's navigation system failed. I am trying to see from which previously invented sun compasses this Apollo sun compass may have been derived. It reminds me of a Bumstead sun compass... but I am not knowledgeable on such things, nor how to really use them.
I tried to read the archives here on the Bumstead compass, but the search links would not work.
