I would suggest timing an occultation which is effectively zero lunar distance. The Nautical Almanac used to list occultations down for all star down to about 7th magnitude so there was a ready supply of events for a telescope of even very modest aperture. Complete tables are harder to come by today and recreating them would be a noble undertaking,
