I'm buying lunch today/tomorrow (Saturday, 28 October 2023) at Machu Picchu, Peru. See you all there. But do remember to wear a hat as the Sun will be quite high at 16:33:58 UT. Go ahead: find the zenith distance at that time from this famous abandoned Inca town.
And for those you who can't make it, if you happen to be in Connecticut, head down to Hammonasset Beach. You can watch the Sun at local noon... Not straight up, of course. A long way from the zenith, in fact. But at that moment, ponder the fact that you and the folks at Mach Picchu are seeing the same noon at that same instant. And their noon Sun is passing right through the zenith as your noon is exactly due South. You're on the same longitude.
No. Don't bother showing up for lunch in Machu Picchu. I'm teaching one of my celestial navigation workshops again tomorrow at Mystic Seaport Museum. :)
