Well said, Frank. My grandmother used to say everything was a mixture of good bad and indifferent. One other positive about Maury is his engaging prose. I'm especially fond of his first sentence re the Gulf Stream: "There is a river in the ocean."
On the general subject of facing up to historical evils, I found Susan Neiman's recent book Learning From The Germans instructive. Then of course there is Friedrich Schlegel's rueful "We learn from history that nations do not learn from history."
