Please see photos as promised. You'll note from the circuit diagram that with +3V connected, you’re losing power through the dimmer resistance even with the sextant not in use. That's why, if you’re only using 2xAA batteries, it’s best to use a 2xAA battery box with an On/Off switch, so that you can switch them off if you’ve got a long gap between observations. DaveP
