You're absolutely right about the automatic averager. Nevertheless, when using the manual unit on my patio table, the results seems to be a little more accurate when the sextant is well calibrated. I guess the automaic mechanism is adding an additional error when running. That's why I'm building a correction tables right now for the averager run for each 10th index mirrror increment positions (0, 10, 20, etc) and for each string degree position on the fine setting knob (0, 1, 2, up to 8). It takes a long time but I hope it will improve accuracy.
I must go to work now but will continue this discussion later.
