I find the vernier useful in estimating the tenths.
The issue / problem I have with those such as you illustrate is the placement of the lines on the scale nd vernier.
Because our binocular vision relies upon our eyes displaced horizontally, it’s easiest to discern visually the adjacent marks if they are arrayed vertically. Thus, to read accurately the vernier in the photo, you must rotate it 90 degrees. Of course, when you do that the numerals are not oriented for easy reading.
