Many older sextants and a few newer ones come with one or more eyepiece shades, that attach to the eyepiece of the telescope. They allow AH use with a highly reflective surface like mercury, and allow index error determination using the sun (I use the horizon as it's easier on my neck). Before any one asks, they don't get hot and shatter.
