Alexandre, the advise to just blacken the rear surface is even more problematic!
Consider if the arm's axis is NOT laying on the frontal face of the mirror - there will be huge error in the readings, angle-dependant one.
I'm for buying/fitting fresh replacement mirrors rather than messing with the old ones. Frank is right about keeping the instrument as close to original state as possible - for collector's sake.
