A friend passed me this excerpt from On the Trail of Legions - The Roman Navy and Merchant Marine.
The inference is that the Romans used this method, but all the author states is that it "would have been of ... use to the Ancients". So the description of the method is the author's - Frank's is far better! As for Pytheas' voyage towards the Arctic in summer, the Sun would never have been sufficiently below the horizon to require any other direction finding method.
