Moon's crescent when viewed from low latitudes

Hello.
Me and my collegues are at 25°N 55°E right now.
Last evening we saw Moon's crescend with horns almost horizontal. To my surprise this view was new to them (all of us are "north dwellers"), and nobody could give an explanation to the picture. It took quite some an astronomy lesson to clarify them why the Moon looks so "strange".
