Thank you for your response and attached articles, Robin. I am extremely interested in the challenges that land based navigators/map-makers must have faced, as well as having a fascination for celestial navigation (sea and sky) in general. Very interesting background and quite surprising that Powell's lunars did not provide acceptable longitudes.
