Peter, it sounds like your navigator had a Mark V, which has a lever-actuated prism so it can be used with the horizon. I had one years ago and the averager was a feature I liked a lot.

When I started racing off shore, our navigator used a bubble sextant he had acquired somehow, even though he was ex-Navy and had used horizon sextants then. When he died and I assumed some navigation responsibilities I bought a plastic Davis 25 to suppliment our LORAN-C. It would do in a pinch. Around 1990 I was able to buy a used Tamaya 833 at a really good price and have been very happy with it ever since, although my sailing now is leisurly and rarely off-shore anymore.
