You're right, a minute of longitude at 40 degrees is 67 feet shorter than one at 39 degrees. When your sextant observations become so accurate that this becomes an issue, let us know.

I just found a Mercator sheet which already has the Longitude degree marks. Nice idea.
A problem I'm curious in solving is if my AP Latitude is N40° and the AP Longitude is W075° must a fix that results between N39° and N40° be interpreted based on the N39° Latitude/Longitude scale? As the fix is South of N40° the Longitude must expand a bit which will give a different fix.
