The link below will take you to a National Public Radio article on fading Betelgeuse in beloved Orion. Seems to propose that learned types like astronomers say the supernova could happen in a "relatively short period" of time or take another 10,000 years to explode.
Audio of the story wasn't posted on the link below but is promised to be up and playable in a few hours. Anyway when I heard the story I thought that I'd mention it as soon as I was able.
If you go to just NPR.org and then to the search tab and do a site search on "Betelgeuse" you find several articles pertaining to this star. And since it is a navigational star, the articles NPR ran on this star might prove thought provoking and relevant in the star's demise.
