I would be interested to see a poll that showed the average age of those interested in CN. Like you mentioned, I'm sure it skews towards the upper range. I would hate to see CN disappear as an art and science.
My other hobby is amateur radio and while in the past it was mostly older people, there has been a massive influx of younger operators mostly due to the tech changes in the hobby (digital communications, computers etc). Also YouTube has been a huge influence in getting people into the hobby. Is there even any decent content on YT about CN? I really haven't looked.
