This is a wonderful read. I too recommend it.
An ingenious way to of using the telegraph to notify several stations arrayed east-west of the exact time a key star mades meridian passage. The difference in times yielded very precise relative differences in longitude between those stations. What a game changer the telegraph was for precise mapping.
BTW, I notice your ham call sigh. 26 NavListers have identified themselves as Hams. A group of hams occasionally meet at the Samuel Morse estate, Locust Grove, in Poughkeepsie, NY. The visitor center museum displays vintage equipment, some of which is identical to the equipment used for determining longitude.
