    Frank,
Thanks for editing my message, but frankly speaking I do not see why there was a need to do this.
I compared the result with the original copy, and the main difference is that
the right edges of the lines are aligned.
I do not see why this is important.

The Stone age software that I am using is called Microsoft Outlook, Light
version, and this is the standard e-mail
    software in my university.

I also wanted to post a scan of 2 pages of the book, but then recalled how
angry you were when I suggested posting
some pirated text on this site:-)

Returning to the essence of the story, it was already discussed in this site
that some well trained navigators can estimate
angles by eye with high accuracy. Another matter is that they were able to
compute without any tables he azimuth of the Moon
at a given time (by watch). Perhaps it is assumed that they practiced Lunars
systematically:-) and happened to remember the
difference in hour angle between the Sun and the Moon from some recent observations?

    Alex.

Since I had to do quite a lot of manual editing to get Alex's message in
proper form (thanks to stone-age email software on the user's end! :) ), I
acquired copies of the original pages of the book. Here are those pages for
context in case anyone wants a little more for this story. This is fiction,
of course, but if you want to think through whether it makes any sense in
navigation terms, it may help to have this context.
