I think a better movie script would be that the captain slowly suspects poor navigation performance (as a good captain would!), and half way through the flight goes back and takes over the navigation himself. He straightens everything out and brings the ship safely home a la John Wayne in High and Mighty.

I wonder if the 1965 film and earlier novel 'Flight of the Phoenix' might have been partly inspired by this. Apparently it bombed at the box office but became something of a cult movie.
Not sure the details of the failed navigation would have much popular appeal outside of navlist. :-)
